Bellator 264 Results: Gegard Mousasi Retains Middleweight Belt With Vicious Knockout Victory Over John Salter

Bellator middleweight champion Gegard Mousasi

Gegard Mousasi is making sure he doesn’t lose the Bellator middleweight belt ever again.

The Dutch-Armenian mixed-martial artist defeated John Salter with a third-round knockout in the Bellator middleweight championship fight at Bellator 264 Friday night in Uncasville, Connecticut.

Mousasi launched a series of ground strikes against Salter before the referee stopped the fight giving the champion his first title defense win during his second stint as middleweight champion.

“I stayed calm in the first round,” Mousasi told reporters during his post-fight press conference. “I’m not slippery. He’s still strong. So I didn’t take chances to get up right away but I could’ve. I was physically definitely the stronger guy, even though I look skinny.”

Mousasi won the belt for the first time at Bellator 200, but lost it after defending the title just once. He won the belt for the second time in his last fight at Bellator 250 when he defeated Douglas Lima via unanimous decision. Mousasi improved to 6-1 in Bellator and 48-7-2 in his professional career with Friday night’s win.

Mousasi has his sights set on undefeated fighter Austin Vanderford for his next title defense.

“He’s undefeated,” Mousasi said. “Definitely he feels confident. He hasn’t tasted defeat yet. It’s going to be a tough fight. He’s a wrestler. But if he takes me down, it’s not like he’s going to hurt me. I’ve never been ground and pounded.”
