Emma Poghosyan Makes History with Gold at European Weightlifting Championships
On the significant date of Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day, Emma Poghosyan made a remarkable achievement by winning the gold medal in the women’s 86 kg division at the 2026 European Weightlifting Championships held on April 24.
Poghosyan’s victory on this poignant day marks her first senior European title, and she secured the gold by lifting a total of 248 kg, narrowly defeating Russia’s Iana Sotieva, who totaled 247 kg. In addition to her overall title, Poghosyan excelled in the clean and jerk, earning a small gold medal with a lift of 141 kg. She also claimed a small bronze in the snatch with a lift of 107 kg.
The achievement is a testament to Poghosyan’s rapid rise within the sport; she previously captured world junior gold in 2024. Her recent performance not only adds a prestigious title to her résumé but also puts her among the most promising athletes in Armenian weightlifting.
