Garik Melkonyan to Represent Armenia at 2026 Winter Paralympics
Armenia will be represented by Garik Melkonyan at the upcoming 2026 Winter Paralympic Games in Milano-Cortina, marking a significant moment in the nation’s sports history with his participation in para cross-country skiing.
Garik Melkonyan, a 20-year-old athlete from Ashotsk, is set to compete as Armenia’s sole representative at the 2026 Winter Paralympic Games. Melkonyan, who was born with a disability that resulted in the loss of his left arm, has shown remarkable determination and talent in para cross-country skiing. He trains rigorously alongside decorated Olympian Mikayel Mikayelyan, benefiting from the guidance of Mikayelyan’s father, who has been instrumental in developing his skills.
In 2024, Melkonyan made history by becoming the first Armenian to secure a medal in an international para-skiing competition, earning a bronze medal in the 8 km classic standing event. This achievement has not only put him on the map as a talented skier but has also highlighted the potential of Armenian athletes in the Paralympic arena. As he prepares for the Winter Games, Melkonyan aims to inspire others with his story of perseverance and success against the odds.
