Karen Khachanov will have to settle for second.

The Russian-born Armenian representing the Russian Olympic Committee lost to Germany’s Alexander Zverev in the gold medal match in straight sets (6-3, 6-1) to earn the silver medal in the men’s singles tournament at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.

Khachanov advanced to the final to guarantee a medal after defeating Pablo CarreƱo Busta of Spain in the semifinals in straight sets.

The final result was still a strong one for Khachanov, who had failed to advance past the quarterfinals in any Grand Slam event.
