Armenian Women’s Basketball Team Makes Strong Return to International Competition
After a long absence from the senior international stage, the Armenian Women’s National Basketball Team has made a resounding comeback in 2024, showcasing their determination and skill in FIBA competition.
The Armenian Women’s National Basketball Team has returned to the international arena, marking a significant milestone in the country’s sports history after years of dormancy. Following their last notable achievement in 2010, when they secured a silver medal at the European Championship for Small Countries, the team had been largely inactive for over a decade. However, in 2024, a new generation of players emerged, leading to Armenia’s first official senior win in 14 years.
This resurgence reflects not only the talent of the players but also the hard work and dedication of the coaching staff and supporters who have kept the dream alive. The team finished sixth in their return to international competition, signaling a bright future for Armenian women’s basketball.
Looking ahead, the squad, spearheaded by key players Lia Krumian, Kayla Keshmeshian, Mary Markaryan, and Sylvia Vartazarian, is gearing up for the 2026 FIBA Women’s European Championship for Small Countries. The championship will take place in Peja, Kosovo, from June 23-28, where Armenia will face off against the host nation, Kosovo, on June 23, followed by a match against Andorra on June 25. With renewed strength and experience, Armenia aims to continue building on their recent successes and establish themselves as a competitive force in women’s basketball.
