Gor Sahakyan Wins Silver at 2026 European Weightlifting Championships
Armenian weightlifter Gor Sahakyan clinched a silver medal in the 71 kg category at the 2026 European Weightlifting Championships, narrowly missing out on gold by just 2 kg.
The 22-year-old athlete demonstrated impressive strength and skill at the championship, with a standout performance that included a small gold medal in the snatch and a bronze in the clean & jerk. Sahakyan successfully lifted 150 kg in the snatch after also securing a lift of 147 kg. In the clean & jerk, he achieved a lift of 180 kg but fell short in his attempt to reach 185 kg.
In the final standings for the 71 kg category, Yusuf Genç of Turkey took the gold medal with a total of 332 kg (147 kg snatch and 185 kg clean & jerk). Sahakyan followed closely with 330 kg (150 kg snatch and 180 kg clean & jerk), while Egor Popov of Russia earned bronze with a total of 328 kg (145 kg snatch and 183 kg clean & jerk).
With this latest achievement, Sahakyan now boasts four European Championship medals in his career, including two golds and two silvers. Team Armenia has also seen success at the championship, with Garnik Cholakyan and Alexandra Grigoryan each earning silver medals in their respective weight categories.
