Varazdat Lalayan Triumphs at 2026 Armenian Weightlifting Championships
The 2026 Armenian Weightlifting Championships concluded on February 15, showcasing remarkable performances, with Varazdat Lalayan leading the charge in the super-heavyweight category, lifting a staggering 440 kg.
The national championships held in Armenia culminated on February 15, 2026, marking a triumphant event for athletes across various weight categories. In the men’s competitions, notable gold medalists included Garnik Cholakyan from Gyumri, who clinched the 60 kg title with a total lift of 272 kg, and Zhora Grigoryan from Ararat, who secured the 65 kg gold with 254 kg.
As the competition progressed, Gor Sahakyan of Vedi made his mark by dominating the 71 kg class with a notable lift of 330 kg, followed closely by Martin Poghosyan, also from Ararat, who won the 79 kg division with a total of 337 kg. Rafik Harutyunyan from Gyumri showcased his strength by taking the 88 kg title with 350 kg, while Ara Aganyan secured the 94 kg championship with a lift of 370 kg.
Garik Karapetyan of Gyumri triumphed in the 110 kg category, lifting 380 kg. The spotlight, however, was on Varazdat Lalayan, who finished first in the super-heavyweight (+110 kg) class with an impressive total lift of 440 kg.
In the women’s divisions, Kristine Babayan of Ararat won the 48 kg category, while Isabella Yaylyan from Yerevan emerged victorious in the 53 kg class. Other winners included Alexandra Grigoryan and Natalia Sargsyan from Gyumri in the 58 kg and 63 kg categories respectively. The championships also saw Mary Misakyan of Kasakh win gold in the 69 kg category, Anna Amroyan from Gyumri secure 77 kg, and Emma Poghosyan claiming victory in the 86 kg division. Tatev Hakobyan of Yerevan completed the women’s event by winning the super-heavyweight category (+86 kg).
