Hovhannes Bachkov Wins Appeal, Secures Bronze At World Boxing Championships
Hovhannes Bachkov won his appeal over a controversial split decision in his light welterweight quarterfinal fight against Somchai Wongsuwan at the 2021 AIBA World Boxing Championships.
After he originally lost the fight, the Boxing Federation of Armenia appealed the unfair decision and following deliberations from a panel of judges, the outcome of the fight was overturned in favor of Bachkov.
Bachkov succumbed to Andy Cruz of Cuba in the semifinals, but was awarded a bronze medal for being in the final four of his weight group.
Bachkov’s bronze comes three months after he won bronze at the Tokyo Olympics.
