Malkhas Amoyan Becomes World Champion In Greco-Roman Wrestling
Malkhas Amoyan is a world champion.
The Armenian Greco-Roman wrestler defeated Sergey Kutuzov of Russia, 3-1, to win gold in the Greco-Roman 72 kg bracket of the 2021 World Wrestling Championships in Oslo. This comes after Amoyan won silver at the 2021 European Championships.
Amoyan had a dominant tournament. He started off with an 8-0 win over Havard Jorgensen of Norway. His next victim was Kristupas Sleiva of Lithuania. He took care of him with a 5-0 win. Then, in the semifinals, Amoyan defeated Mohammed Reza Mokhtari of Iran, 10-6, to advance to the finals.
Finishing third with the bronze in the 72 kg bracket was Gevorg Sahakyan, an Armenian representing Poland. Sahakyan defeated Turkey’s Cengiz Arslan to capture the medal.
