Armenia Caps Off European U23 and Junior Weightlifting Championships With Nine Gold Medals
The future of Armenian weightlifting is extremely bright.
Nine Armenians captured gold medals at the 2021 European U21 and Junior Weightlifting Championships in Finland last week, culminating with Varazdat Lalayan’s lift which broke a European record in the +109 kg U23 event.
Other gold medal winners were Arsen Martirosyan (109 kg, U23), Karen Avagyan (89 kg, U23), Rafik Harutyunyan (81 kg, U23), Margarita Arakelyan (87 kg, Juniors – Women), Liana Gyurjyan (81 kg, Juniors – Women), Karen Margaryan (81 kg, Juniors – Men), Gor Sahakyan (67 kg, Juniors – Men) and Garnik Cholakyan (55 kg, Juniors – Men)
The nine gold medals was second-most only to Russia, who won 10. It’s important to note that one of the Russian gold medal winners was Armenian — Artur Babayan (96 kg, Juniors – Men). Armenia won a total of 15 medals during the competition — tied for second-most only to Russia.
