FIFA World Cup Qualification: Armenia Suffers Calamitous Result Against Liechtenstein
This was supposed to be Armenia’s coming out party after a disappointing 6-0 loss to Germany on Sunday.
Instead, the Armenians suffered a calamitous result at home against Liechtenstein with a 1-1 draw.
Armenia dominated possession, controlling the ball for 78 percent of the match. They also had 28 shot attempts compared to Liechtenstein’s three. Despite that, Armenia managed to score just one goal in the match, a successful penalty kick from Henrikh Mkhitaryan during stoppage time of the first half.
Armenia tried its best to expand its lead so they can improve their goal differential in the tournament after Sunday’s 6-0 drubbing, but instead Noah Frick cashed in during the 80th minute to equalize the score. Several late chances by Armenia failed as fans were left silent at Hanrapetakan Stadium.
Liechtenstein entered the match with a seven-match losing streak.
