Khachanov needed little time to assert himself at Flushing Meadows, dropping just four games across the entire match. After edging clear in the opening set, he took complete control of the contest, conceding nothing in the second and only a single game in the third to close out the victory in straight sets.
Burruchaga, who had no answer once the first set slipped away, was unable to build any momentum against an opponent who has previously gone deep in New York. Khachanov reached the US Open semifinals in 2022, the best result of his career at the tournament, and the tennis star’s opening performance here suggested he is again comfortable on the hard courts of Queens.
The win sends Khachanov through to the second round, where he will continue a campaign that has begun in impressive fashion. It marks an efficient start to his run in New York, with minimal time spent on court and few concerns to address before his next match.
