Suren Ishkhanyan Claims Gold at U17 European Wrestling Championships

Armenia celebrates a new champion as Suren Ishkhanyan secures gold in men’s freestyle wrestling at the 2026 U17 European Championships, showcasing remarkable skill and determination throughout the tournament.

Suren Ishkhanyan, representing Armenia, has triumphed in the 55 kg category of men’s freestyle wrestling at the 2026 U17 European Championships held in Bulgaria. Ishkhanyan claimed the gold medal on Friday after defeating Russia’s Osman Temirsultanov with a decisive score of 8-2 by VPO1 in the final match.

Throughout the tournament, Ishkhanyan demonstrated his prowess on the mat, beginning with a commanding 10-0 victory against France’s Ilan Churayev in the quarterfinals. He continued his impressive performance with a 15-4 win over Hungary’s Kristóf Shumeiko in the semifinals, securing his place in the final with exceptional technique and strategy.

This gold medal adds to the successful week for Armenia’s U17 wrestling team, who have shown remarkable talent and competitiveness. The freestyle wrestling events follow a strong showing by the Greco-Roman team, which brought home seven medals earlier in the competition, highlighting Armenia’s growing presence in international wrestling.
