Team Armenia is off to a strong start at the 2021 European Junior & U23 Weightlifting Championships in Finland.

In the first few days of competition, two Armenians have already won gold and there are a large contingent of heavy favorites to follow in their respective disciplines in the following days.

Garnik Cholakyan was the first to strike gold in the juniors 55-kg competition. Cholakyan finished third in the snatch exercise (100 kg) before lifting 130 kg in the clean and jerk to total at 230 kg for first place overall.

Then, Gor Sahakyan swept the snatch and clean-and-jerk exercises in the juniors 67-kg weight class to win a gold of his own. Sahakyan lifted 136 kg in the snatch exercise and 165 kg in the clean-and-jerk exercise for a total weight score of 301 kg.

There are still more than a dozen Armenian men and women who have yet to compete in both the U23 and Junior divisions.
