Olympic Basketball: Brian Goorjian, Australia Fall Apart Against Star-Studded Team USA In Semifinals
For a quarter and a half, it seemed like Australia, led by head coach Brian Goorjian, was going to pull off the unthinkable and shock Kevin Durant and Team USA in the semifinal of the men’s basketball tournament.
Australia led 41-26 with 5:25 left in the second quarter and it appeared the Aussies were about to secure their first ever medal in men’s basketball, but that’s when the Americans put their foot on the gas and never looked back.
The United States outscored Australia 71-37 the rest of the way and advanced to their fourth-straight gold medal match led by Kevin Durant’s game-high 23 points and Devin Booker, who added 20 points.
The Australians, led by NBA players like Dante Exum, Patty Mills and Joe Ingles, entered the semifinal undefeated after going 3-0 in group pool and then destroying Argentina, 97-59, in the quarterfinals. Goorjian’s squad will now take on the loser of the semifinal between France and Slovenia in the bronze medal match.
