Olympic Weightlifting: Simon Martirosyan Sets Snatch Record, Wins Second Career Silver MEdal
The good news? Simon Martirosyan won his second career silver medal after lifting a total of 423 kg in the men’s 109kg weightlifting competition.
The bad news? The Armenian came so close to winning gold.
Entering his final two lifts, Martirosyan was 7-kg shy of eventual gold medalist Akbar Djuraev of Uzbekistan, who lifted a total of 430 kg. Martirosyan failed on his two final clean-and-jerk attempts of 238 kg and won the silver medal. He did, however, set the snatch record in the 109-kg division with a 195 kg lift.
Martirosyan’s second-place finish resulted in Armenia’s second silver medal of the day, after Artur Aleksanyan became the first Olympian representing Armenia to win a gold, silver and bronze in an Olympic career.
