Olympic Weightlifting: Izabella Yaylyan Has Disappointing Result In Women’s 59-KG Event
Izabella Yaylyan’s first career Olympic event started off strong, but it didn’t end smoothly.
The Armenian weightlifter failed on her final two clean-and-jerk attempts of the women’s 59-kg event and finished seventh in the event after lifting a combined mass of 205 kg.
In the preceeding snatch portion of the competition, Yaylyan was successful on her first two attempts (90 kg and 95 kg), but she failed on her third and final attempt of 97 kg. Had she succeeded, she would’ve been in second place heading into the clean-and-jerk portion of the competition.
Yaylyan nailed her first clean-and-jerk attempt at 110 kg and that score stood because of her failed second and third attempts at 115 kg.
Heavy favorite and world-record holder Kuo Hsing-Chun of Chinese Taipei won the gold easily after lifting a total of 236 kg. Polina Guryeva of Turkmenistan won the silver (217 kg) and Mikiko Andoh of Japan won the bronze (214 kg).
