Olympic Men’s Judo: Ferdinand Karapetian Loses In First Match Of 73-Kg Bracket

Ferdinand Karapetian was hoping his stay at the Olympic games would last longer than it did.

Unfortunately for the Armenian judoka, Karapetian lost to Kazakhstan’s Zhansay Smagulov in the Round of 32 of the 73-kg judo bracket.

Karapetian entered the Olympics with many accolades, including gold at the 2018 European Championships in Tel Aviv.

Smagulov went on to lose in the Round of 16 to Arthur Margelidon of Canada. Shohei Ono of Japan ended up winning gold in the competition. This was Japan’s fourth gold medal in judo so far.
